Missouri Beef Cow Inventory

Because of the state’s pasture resources and popularity of operating small-scale farms, Missouri has become a major feeder calf producer. Many cattle producers throughout Missouri own and raise beef cows. The state’s beef cow inventory concentrates in the southwest and south central regions. The map below illustrates the distribution of beef cows by county.

Missouri Cattle Cycle

Several factors influence beef cow inventory variation. Key factors include annual rainfall patterns and national feeder calf price cycles. The graph below depicts the relationship between U.S. calf prices and Missouri beef cow inventory from 1996 to 2014, and it demonstrates the cattle producer response to price cycles. The Missouri analysis suggests that prices and inventory levels maintain a somewhat inverse relationship. During the observed period, prices peaked in 2014, and the price spike quickly followed the inventory cycle’s trough in 2013.
