Missouri Beef Cow Inventory

Because of the state’s pasture resources and popularity of operating small-scale farms, Missouri has become a major feeder calf producer. Many cattle producers throughout Missouri own and raise beef cows. The state’s beef cow inventory concentrates in the southwest and south central regions. The map below illustrates the distribution of beef cows by county.

Missouri is ranked number three in U.S. beef cow inventory, behind the states of Texas and Oklahoma. Since 2013, beef cow inventories have been building in Missouri. On January 1, 2017, Missouri had a beef cow inventory of 2.052 million cows.
